You are a small thing, and you must learn to fight。

Swiv has taken her grandmother's advice too literally。 Now she's at home, suspended from school。 Mom is pregnant and preoccupied - and so Swiv is in the older woman's charge, receiving a very different form of education from a teacher with a style all her own。

Grandma likes her stories fast, troublesome and funny。 She's known the very worst that life can throw at you - and has met it every time with a wild, unnamable spirit, fighting for joy and independence every step of the way。 But will maths lessons based on Amish jigsaws and classes on How to Dig a Winter Grave inspire the same fire in Swiv, and ensure it never goes out?

Time is running short。 Grandma's health is failing, the baby is on the way, as a family of three extraordinary women prepare to face life's great changes together。

Poignant, hilarious and deeply moving, Fight Night is a girl's love letter to the women raising her and a tribute to one family's fighting spirit。

Androgynous, nine-year-old Swiv tells the story of three generations of women living in Canada, and how important it is for all of them, including Swiv, to fight。 Her mother is in her third trimester of pregnancy (who knows who the father is) and her grandmother, frail as can be, is ironically vivacious and hilarious。 It’s unclear what the women (and Swiv) are fighting for, though for Swiv it’s being King of the Castle while beating out the older boys。 Swiv has been suspended from school for fig Androgynous, nine-year-old Swiv tells the story of three generations of women living in Canada, and how important it is for all of them, including Swiv, to fight。 Her mother is in her third trimester of pregnancy (who knows who the father is) and her grandmother, frail as can be, is ironically vivacious and hilarious。 It’s unclear what the women (and Swiv) are fighting for, though for Swiv it’s being King of the Castle while beating out the older boys。 Swiv has been suspended from school for fighting, yet the grandmother preaches the virtues of fighting。I like the idea of the story but it fell a little flat since what the females were fighting for was so nebulous。 There is an evil man that everyone hates but it’s not clear what he did to be so loathed。 I took off a star because I can’t stand when authors fail to use quotation marks。 It made the reading choppy。 I liked the story because of the idea of women fighting for their rights and because the character of grandma was such a force of nature。 。。。more

This book was on the short list for the Giller Literary prize and I like to read all of the entries when I can。 It helps me to see what literature is available and popular in Canada。I have not read any of Miriam Toews work previously , so was not acquainted with her books。 I was impressed with this one !It started out slow , but once I realized the premise that Swiv was the narrator of the story and the caretaker of her grandmother, it made more sense to me。It was funny, sad, and so true to life This book was on the short list for the Giller Literary prize and I like to read all of the entries when I can。 It helps me to see what literature is available and popular in Canada。I have not read any of Miriam Toews work previously , so was not acquainted with her books。 I was impressed with this one !It started out slow , but once I realized the premise that Swiv was the narrator of the story and the caretaker of her grandmother, it made more sense to me。It was funny, sad, and so true to life for so many kids and families。 I actually laughed out loud at times and chuckled throughout most of the book。 Great read ! 。。。more

If the best thing you can say about a book is that it was a book and you read it, that's not very much, is it? This is a book that I read。 There were parts that I found funny and parts that made me cry, but I'm an easy audience for easily accessible emotions。 There was, mercifully, less suicide in this one than in the last Toews novel I read, but it was there in the background driving the grownups slightly batty and underpinning the disfunction of all the adult characters。 I can't imagine coming If the best thing you can say about a book is that it was a book and you read it, that's not very much, is it? I’m crying

POV1 Swiv accompanies her German Grandma everywhere as her Mom is expecting。 Grandma, a rare and intense cutie, dies in the same hospital where the baby is born。 Some touching incidents。

Renee Hache

More of a character study than a story with a plot but the writing was enjoyable, just not really my type of book。

Miriam Toews is one of my favourite authors。 She writes similar narratives based on her life experiences。 Although initially I felt that again this was a similar storyline to previous books, I couldn't help but latch onto the intergenerational characters。 The Grandmother in particular is a hoot to read about。 I can hear her wild words。 I loved the ending to this book。 Many tears。 Miriam Toews is one of my favourite authors。 She writes similar narratives based on her life experiences。 Although initially I felt that again this was a similar storyline to previous books, I couldn't help but latch onto the intergenerational characters。 The Grandmother in particular is a hoot to read about。 I can hear her wild words。 I loved the ending to this book。 Many tears。 。。。more

Loved everything about this book。 Grandma, Swipe, the nephews。 Fabulous

Tati

It was, like, good。 Vaguely trite? Maybe that’s not the exact right word but it was just… sweet? Palatable? Meh? For everyone? Better than mass markets and not quite a “beach read”。 Felt like a Matthew Quick novel。 Millennial fiction。 The grandma was fun。 Albania storyline was wild。 I like the name Gord。

Very unique narration style and funny, engaging characters。 I couldn't quite get into the style as much as I wanted to。 Very unique narration style and funny, engaging characters。 I couldn't quite get into the style as much as I wanted to。 。。。more

Cathy

Lovely story about a young girl and her grandma。 You really get to know the grandma so well even though the whole book is narrated as a letter from the girl to her absent dad。 Love this grandma!

Not a huge fan of this book (it took me SIX months to finish)。 I would love this writing style for a short story but an entire book written from an eleven year old’s point of view is funny but a bit tedious。 I could never read more than 20 mins or so at a time。 A little more plot would have helped as well。 The last chapter was hilarious though。

SR

I like this author but did not like this book。 The characters all seemed crazy and nothing made sense to me。 I would not recommend this book。

Murphy Harrington

One of the books that opens your heart up and makes room for new beautiful emotions

Didn’t like this book - forced humour and couldn’t get into it。 Although I loved All My Puny Sorrows, I didn’t like Women Talking either and don’t think this author is for me。

Loved Swiv and Grandma! The story had me chuckling all the way through!

3。5, not a big fan of wacky elderly people。。。。probably because I am so close to being that。Well written and good characterization。

Katherine

I love this book but for some reason it took me a long time to read it。 I could only do a few chapters at a time。

Zita

This is an unusual book。 It says so much without saying anything at all。 The story is told from the perspective of a young girl as she writes a letter to her father about her life。 The letter is written in a stream of consciousness approach which, as you can image, coming from a child strays all over the place。 Had I known this was what the book was like I don't think I would have picked it up。 But, I am glad I did, because it was a unique and thoroughly enjoyable read。 This is an unusual book。 It says so much without saying anything at all。 The story is told from the perspective of a young girl as she writes a letter to her father about her life。 The letter is written in a stream of consciousness approach which, as you can image, coming from a child strays all over the place。 Had I known this was what the book was like I don't think I would have picked it up。 But, I am glad I did, because it was a unique and thoroughly enjoyable read。 。。。more

This was my second attempt to read Fight Night, and once again, I couldn’t get more than halfway through without putting it down。 For whatever reason, her characters didn’t fully resonate with me。
